Bill Belichick is currently the head coach for the New England Patriots. It was believed that President Trump was looking forward to presenting him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
But reports coming in are that the patriotic coach won’t accept such an award following all the nation’s ongoing protests. Belichick released a statement on Monday, which explained why he had to decline such an award from the President, himself.
He explained how he appreciated the honor, but President Trump supporters stormed the U.S Capitol, but with the events that took place, he didn’t feel it was the right thing to accept the medal. The protests happened due to Trump’s supporters protesting against the Electoral College’s victory for President-elect Joe Biden.
The protests are coming at a very bad timing when the nation is still recording more coronavirus cases and deaths every day. Currently, the USA has reported over 23 million cases and more than 386k deaths. With the new research and production of the COVID-19 vaccine, we hope the coronavirus cases and deaths will reduce significantly.
According to a statement through NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Belichick decided not to accept the award following the tragic events of last week,
The statement from the head coach read as follows:
“Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients. Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred, and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.”
He further stated that he is an American citizen who respects all the nation’s values, freedom, and mostly, the democracy that has been the norm in politics for many years.
Belichick touched on how in 2020, they addressed social justice issues after lengthy conversations and great leadership with the New England Patriots team. And all the issues concerning human and equality rights addressed have now moved to the forefront and became actions.
With such a gesture, he believes that turning down this individual award shows how much he is committed to promoting social justice and remaining true to the people, team, and the country. For Belichick, an award like that doesn’t outweigh all the benefits of addressing the issues affecting most people in the country.
If Belichick had accepted the award, the event was scheduled to take place on Thursday, according to an Associated Press report through a White House official.
Of late, President Trump has been giving out awards that seem not contextual as before because he already lost the recent general elections to President-elect Joe Biden, who in a matter of days will be sworn as the 46th President of the United States of America on January 20, 2021.
Belichick declined the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but he is one of the most successful football coaches with the most wins among all the NFL’s active coaches.
