Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season’s return already kicked off with the 49ers losing to the Cardinals, 20 -24. Injuries have decimated the 49ers, and they are quite eager to sign a WR so that they can keep the competition high in the league.
Coincidentally, Mohamed Sanu was a free agent after being released by the New England Patriots, is now the most available WR for the 49ers. The news of Sanu signing with the 49ers was reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network Insider, who released the statement as per Sanu’s agent. The contract is expected to be a one-year deal.
On Tuesday, Mike McCartney, Sanu’s agent, talked of how both parties reached an agreement that will see Sanu reunite with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, offensive coordinator for Atlanta, his team back in 2016.
The need for a receiver by the 49ers is after they placed Deebo Samuel on injured reserve after a broken foot last week. The immediate receiver they had was Richie James Jr, who hurt his hamstring during their first loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Then, they have rookie Brandon Aiyuk on his recovery from a hamstring injury.
The other 49ers player to be set on the sideline with uncertainty whether he will fit for the next game is Tight End George Kittle after he sprained his knee against the Cardinals. It would be bad if Kittle’s status remains up in the air considering that he was given a 5-year extension worth $75 million.
The first game was not all good for the 49ers, who were the favorites to win against the Cardinals, but ended up losing to them with scores of 20-24.
The 49ers only recorded four catches. Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne caught two passes for 34 yards, and Slot Receiver Trent Taylor caught two passes for 7 yards. And this explains why the team believes it needs an additional wide receiver to help them win their next games.
The only 49ers receiver available and healthy is Dante Pettis, who was targeted once on 30 pass patterns. Furthermore, Pettis has not recorded any catch on four targets in the past nine games.
Sanu may be the right receiver to help them catch passes after his productive time in Atlanta. In three or so seasons and 53 games, he recorded 225 catches for 2507 yards. And luckily, the 49ers got him for free after the New England Patriots released him after an unsuccessful tenure. With the Patriots, in eight games, Sanu recorded 26 catches for 207 yards.
Mohamed Sanu, 31 years old, has recorded 403 catches in 4507 yards and 26 touchdowns in 118 career games in just four years. The 49ers are looking to bring together Sanu and Coach Shanahan after leading the Falcons to the Super Bowl.
Sanu, as a wide receiver, 49ers will be his fourth team and is expected to give it all through runs or passes to help them win more games during the 2020 NFL season comeback.
