On Thursday, the New England Patriots named Cam Newton, 31, as their starting quarterback, and also, teammates voted him as the new team captain.
It is rare for the Patriots to barely elect a player as a team captain after being with the team just a few months, but that isn’t the case with the veteran Cam Newton.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick praised Newton countless times, insisting on how impressed he is with the Quarterback due to his ability to pick up the offense and emphasize his work ethic that shows how devoted and hardworking he is and off the field.
Newton has managed to sweep off the hearts of his coach, teammates, and the Patriots fans since joining the team in July this year. He agreed to a one-year deal with the Patriots that included just $550000 guaranteed on a $1.05M base salary.
It wasn’t all that easy for Newton to be selected the starting Quarterback for the Patriots because he had to compete for the slot against Brian Hoyer and Jarret Stidham. However, Stidham’s negative leg results played a part by increasing Newton’s chances of getting picked as the starting quarterback.
The 2015 NFL MVP and 3-time Pro Bowler, 6-foot-5, and 245 pounds will get the chance to showcase his unique talent in the field and hopefully improve his ranking rates. At the moment, Newton is 30th in terms of quarterbacks ranks due to injuries in recent years.
We can’t deny that Newton is a high-end talent whose game is built around charging through and over people, and the Patriots are lucky to have him in their team as they chase their 12th straight AFC East division title.
The departure of 18-time captain Tom Brady, one of the greatest quarterbacks of this generation, from the New England Patriots as a free agent to Tampa Buccaneers, left a huge void to be filled. Cam Newton stepped up to fill that void after he was voted captain by his teammates.
Newton, 31, when signing with the New England Patriots he was highly regarded as replacing Tom Brady. The way things are heading surely, he is a player to keep your eyes on, as long as he maintains his health status and avoids getting an injury.
Despite his earlier desires to remain with his former team, the Panthers, who nearly won it all for the four seasons while Newton was playing for them, but they choose to release him after signing Teddy Bridgewater as a free agent a 3-year deal.
Cam Newton is settled and comfortable at the New England Patriots, and after being named as the starting Quarterback and captain, he expressed gratitude towards the entire Patriots fraternity. He is looking to taking them to the Super Bowl and expects to give out his 100% for the New England Patriots in this 2020 season.
Indeed, Newton’s experience in the field will be of great use for the Patriots, and we can’t wait to see him back in the field.
