The world is still in expectation of the news that a solution, vaccine, or cure has been found for the novel coronavirus that has caused over 439,897 deaths after infecting over 8 million people around the world.
While the world is waiting for them, there has been news in Britain that comes close to what the world is longing for.
Dexamethasone, one of the cheapest and most widely used drugs, has been announced as a life-saving drug for people with severe coronavirus.
UK experts have confirmed that low-dose dexamethasone is proving to be a breakthrough in the fight against this contagious virus that is shaking the world.
Among other things, the drug is currently being tested to prove whether it is effective against coronavirus.
Preliminary results for dexamethasone show that it reduces the risk of death for patients on ventilators by a third and patients on oxygen by a fifth.
The results show that up to 5,000 lives would have been saved had the drug been used earlier.
The drug can be ideal in poorer countries with poor health systems.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this was a real reason to celebrate Britain’s remarkable scientific achievement.
He added that the UK has taken the steps to ensure that there are still enough supplies in the event of the second high point.
Prof. Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, said the dexamethasone would save lives around the world.
The drug comes at the right time. Although it has been confirmed that 19 out of 20 patients are recovering without being hospitalized, the drug will save those who are seriously overwhelmed by the virus.
Also, this is not the first time that the drug has been applied for human use. It is available on prescription to reduce inflammation in several other conditions, including arthritis and some skin conditions.
In COVID-19 trial, Dexamethasone has been shown to stop some of the damage that can occur if the body’s immune system goes into overdrive when trying to ward off the virus. The overreaction can be life-threatening.
The Oxford University research team conducted a study in which approximately 2,000 hospital patients received the drug and were then compared to another 4,000 without the drug.
Prof. Peter Horby, the chief investigator, said that dexamethasone is the only drug that has so far shown some results in significantly reducing the mortality rate.
Prof. Martin Landry, the lead researcher, said the findings show that life for every eight patients on a ventilator and every 20 to 25 people on oxygen could be saved. He added that this is a clear advantage.
He also confirmed that treating patients with dexamethasone over ten days’ costs £ 5 per each patient.
All in all, dexamethasone is something to celebrate because it is cheap and widespread, and the world can benefit immediately as we wait for a permanent announcement. For this reason, the main results of this study have been quickly published because the effects are so great worldwide.
